Appreciation post: I was cutting my crown molding wrong for months until a client in Boise asked a simple question

I was always trying to match the spring angle perfectly on my miter saw before making the cut, which took forever. The homeowner in Boise just asked, 'Why don't you just cut it upside down and backwards?' I tried it on a 38-inch piece, and the fit was perfect on the first try. Has anyone else had a simple tip completely change how you do a common task?

Ever try to cut vinyl siding? I used to measure each piece, but now I just overlap and snap a line. Saves so much time.

My brother tried that overlap trick on his shed last summer and ended up with a wavy mess that looked like a funhouse mirror. He had to pull every piece down and start over with a tape measure. Finleyk87, I'm sure your lines are straighter than his, but that method gives me flashbacks to watching him cuss at a pile of vinyl scraps. Some shortcuts just aren't worth the headache if your eye isn't perfect. I'll stick with marking each cut, even if it adds ten minutes to the job.

That upside down trick for crown is a game changer for sure. I still remember the day a buddy showed me that and i felt like an idiot for not figuring it out sooner. The whole spring angle thing is way overcomplicated by most folks, honestly. For vinyl siding, the overlap method works fine if you know what you're doing, but it takes practice to get the eye for it. Cutting each piece separately is slower but way safer if you're still learning the ropes. Different strokes for different folks, i guess.
