An old carpenter taught me to always pencil mark both sides of a cut
I was working on a deck build in Portland about ten years ago and a guy named Gene, probably in his late 60s, kept watching me mark up boards. He finally walked over and said "Son, if you only mark one side, the blade drift will eat an eighth inch off your fit." He showed me how he puts a small tick on both edges before cutting. I still do it every time now, especially when trimming out doors. Anyone else pick up a simple habit from an older carpenter that stuck with them?

Started working with an older drywall finisher back in the 90s who taught me to wet the paper tape before you apply it. He said it kept the tape from bubbling up as the mud dried. I thought he was crazy at first but tried it on a big ceiling patch and sure enough not a single blister. Now when I see guys fighting bubbles I want to go show them but you know how people get about their own methods.
