TIL that old-school apprenticeships might have been onto something

For years, I thought college degrees were the only way to get ahead. Seeing how practical skills can open doors changed my mind completely.

Seriously, the old guild system had it figured out centuries ago. You learned a trade by actually doing it, not just reading about it in a textbook. Earning a wage while getting trained beats crushing student debt any day. Now we see coding bootcamps and union trades bringing that model back because it just works.

Those old guilds were pretty closed off though, keeping skills in a small club. That system really slowed down new ideas and made it hard for outsiders to learn. Formal education, for all its flaws, at least tries to give everyone a shot at the same knowledge base.

Honestly, didn't this used to seem like a weird old idea?
