Thought those free resume review sessions were just sales pitches, then a guy at the library in Tucson rewrote my opening line
I always figured free resume help was a trap to get you on a mailing list. Back in March I went to a Saturday session at the public library in Tucson mostly because my sister kept bugging me about it. The guy spent 25 minutes on one bullet point, told me to stop listing duties and start listing what actually changed because of my work, and he was right. I sent out 9 applications with the new version and got 3 callbacks in two weeks, after 5 months of silence with the old one. Has anyone else had a free job help thing actually pay off, or was mine just a lucky room?
Sounds like it was more than luck honestly. Giving free advice doesn't mean the advice is bad, a lot of those library folks are retired HR people who just want to help... the catch is some sessions are sales pitches and some aren't, so you kind of have to feel it out.
