Sat in on 3 interviews last month and every single person botched the same question about a time they messed up
We were hiring for a junior data role in our Austin office. All three people got asked to walk us through a project that went bad. Two of them picked a story where they did nothing wrong. One blamed a deadline. The third just froze for a few seconds and then admitted the mistake was his and walked us through how he fixed it. Guess who we hired.
I get why people do it. Admitting a screwup in an interview feels like handing them a reason to say no. But our manager literally wrote "took zero ownership" in the notes for one of them. I think most people think the question is a trap when it is really just a test of whether you can be honest without falling apart.
What got you picked over the other people in the last interview you actually won, if you know?
Honestly that third person sounds like they just got it, and it stinks that being honest is that rare in interviews. Blaming a deadline is such a weak move too. Sucks for the other two but at least your manager caught it.
