Pro tip: I started asking for the salary range in the first email, and my last 4 applications went way better
I used to do 30 minute phone screens without knowing the pay, and twice last spring I found out at the offer stage that the job in Austin capped at $62k. Now I ask the recruiter point blank in the first email for the range, and 4 out of 5 times they just tell me. It saves me about 6 hours a week of interviews that were never going to work out. If they dodge the question, is that a red flag for you or just normal HR stuff?
