My old supervisor said one sentence in a hallway that made me drop half my resume
I bumped into her at a coffee shop in Austin two weeks ago and she asked how the job hunt was going. I said I was up to 11 versions of my resume, one for every type of role I could think of. She just said, "You sound like you're applying to be everyone except yourself." That hit me because I had been listing 14 skills on every version and none of them said what I actually do well, which is fixing messy client accounts. So I cut it down to one page, 3 jobs, and a short line about the 9 accounts I turned around last year. It is a small win but I already got 2 callbacks this week, which is more than the last month of sending out those other versions. Anybody else ever got called out by somebody who barely knew them and it actually worked?
Man that hallway line is real. My old team lead told me my resume read like a job description and not a person, and I was pissed for like a day until I looked at it again. I had 12 bullet points under one job and not one number in any of them, just stuff like "responsible for client relations." Cut it to 4 bullets with actual results, like the 30% drop in ticket backlog I did in one quarter, and suddenly recruiters were calling back. Turns out people want to know what you did, not what you were around for.
