My old boss said one thing at lunch that stuck with me for 2 years
I grabbed tacos with my former manager last Tuesday and he told me he never takes a job unless he can name the exact skill he'll build in the first 90 days. At the time I thought that was overly picky, but now I'm stuck in a role where I've learned nothing since month 4. Does anyone else have a simple filter like that for choosing between offers?
That filter makes sense on paper but it's kind of a trap too. My buddy used the same logic to pick a job once and ended up learning one super specific software that nobody outside that company uses. Now he's stuck explaining to interviewers why his main skill is basically useless. The real trick might be figuring out what you actually want to be doing in five years, not just what looks shiny for the first few months. Skill building is good but only if that skill is something you can take somewhere else. Otherwise you're just polishing a rock that only fits in that one specific hole.
