I used to think networking was just handing out business cards at events

Honestly, I had a terrible Tuesday last week where I felt totally stuck in my job search. Then I just messaged a guy I used to work with at my old company in Phoenix on a whim, asking for a coffee chat. We met up, and he ended up connecting me with a hiring manager at his new place. That one casual conversation did more than the last three months of online applications. Has anyone else had a random reach-out actually work out for them?
