I thought networking events were a waste of time until last week

Went to a local tech meetup in Austin just to get free pizza, but ended up having a real talk with a senior dev. He gave me a tip about a job opening before it was posted. Has anyone else had a good experience from just showing up somewhere?

Honestly how many times has that actually worked out for people though? I've been to so many of those things and they're mostly just awkward small talk with strangers handing out business cards. Feels like a huge time sink for a tiny chance at something good.

Wait, have you actually landed anything solid from those events or are you just going to the wrong ones? lol I used to think the same thing until I tried smaller niche meetups instead of the giant conference stuff, and it was way less awkward.
