I just found out I've been doing job interviews wrong for like 5 years

I always thought you had to answer every question perfectly and fast, so I'd practice a ton of answers. Last week, I was interviewing for a crew lead spot and got asked about a time I messed up. I gave my usual 'perfectionist' answer, and the guy just stared at me. He said, 'Look, I need someone who can admit a real mistake and tell me how they fixed it, not a robot.' It hit me that I was trying to look flawless instead of honest. Has anyone else had an interview where being real actually helped you get the job?

Yeah, "fake perfect answers" are the worst. It's like trying to sell a car you already know has a bad engine.

Wait, you practiced answers for five years and never got called out before? That's wild. I guess most places just want the robot script. Good on that guy for seeing through it. Being real is scary but they always spot the fake perfect answers. Sounds like you learned the hard way but at least you know now.
