I finally stopped job hopping after a random call from a recruiter

I used to switch jobs every 12-18 months because I thought that was the only way to get a raise. Last year I got a call from a recruiter about a role paying 20% more, but when I talked to my boss about it he actually matched the offer. I had been at that company for 2 years already, working in customer support for a small software firm in Austin. Turns out they valued me more than I realized, they just sucked at showing it during review time. Now I have been there 3 years total and got two more raises just by asking for clear goals and deliverables. Has anyone else had a company step up when you showed them a competing offer, or was my boss just an exception?

Same thing happened to me, my company matched a 25% offer and I've been there five years now.
