Fancy job titles are setting us up for career failure

I accepted a 'Digital Evangelist' role thinking it was strategic. Turns out, I was just managing social media comments all day. A colleague faced the same with 'Operations Ninja' meaning he sorted spreadsheets. This title mismatch makes your resume look weak. Employers will question your real skills during interviews. It can stall your progress for years. Always dig into the actual work before you say yes to a job.

Confirm the job duties in writing before you start. Ask for a typical task list or previous work samples. I've seen people get stuck because their fancy title meant nothing to former employers during reference checks, which hurts more than just the resume.

That point about fancy titles meaning nothing is so real. @barbaranguyen It can really haunt you later when you try to explain your actual skills for the next job.

Feel for you on that, @karen_owens... It's so frustrating when your title sounds big but doesn't match the work you did. Makes the next job hunt way harder than it should be.
