Everyone says take the job with the bigger salary, I picked the smaller one and I don't regret it
Two offers came in 8 months ago, $52k at a big insurance office and $44k at a 6 person design shop in Providence. I took the smaller one and within a year I was running client meetings and learning way more than I ever would have fetching reports for a manager. Curious if anyone else picked the lower paycheck for the experience and how it played out long term.
The part about running client meetings within a year really hit me, because that is the stuff that actually builds a career and you just do not get it fetching reports for some manager at a big insurance office. I get why people push the bigger number, it feels safe and it pays the bills, but $8k is not that much after taxes when you break it down per paycheck. What you got instead was real reps talking to clients and owning work, and that compounds way faster than a small raise ever will. Most folks I know who took the safe higher pay ended up stuck in the same chair two years later with a slightly bigger direct deposit and no new skills. You bet on yourself and it sounds like it paid off, so good on you for trusting your gut on that one.
