Why I switched from a camp stove to a cast iron skillet on a $17 trip
For years I carried a 2-pound propane stove on every hike, even weekend overnights. Last fall I did a 3-day trip near Big Bend and the regulator froze on day two, so I was stuck eating cold beans. I borrowed a friend's cast iron skillet for the next outing and cooked over the fire pit, no extra fuel or parts to break. Now the skillet lives in my pack wrapped in a towel, and I've saved about $40 on canisters since November. The catch is it takes longer to heat and you have to babysit the fire, but I actually like that slower pace. Has anyone else ditched the stove entirely, or am I the only one who enjoys the extra work?
