Why does nobody talk about the 3 AM raccoon problem with pop-up campers

I used to just leave my cooler out by the picnic table like a dummy, now I bungee cord it to a tree after a raccoon stole my entire bag of marshmallows near Lake Tahoe last summer. Has anyone else had to switch their food storage routine because of a specific animal encounter?

HOLD UP. I actually think people OVERthink this raccoon stuff. I've been camping with pop-ups for like 15 years and never had any major problem. I leave my cooler on the picnic table with a rock on top and that's it. Maybe they just don't like my cooking or something, but I swear half this paranoia is just people sharing scary stories online that make everyone else freak out.

I read somewhere that raccoons can actually remember specific campers and their routines, which is terrifying. A guy on a hiking forum said they follow the same paths every night looking for easy food, so if you leave stuff out once they'll keep checking that spot. I started locking my cooler in the car since my own Tahoe raccoon incident, but now I'm paranoid they'll figure out how to open car doors. Some people swear by those smell-proof bags, but I heard racoons can still sniff them out if the food is warm.
