TIL a $30 emergency blanket is worth its weight in gold
Got caught in a surprise sleet storm during a spring hike in the Smokies last week. My regular rain jacket was soaked through and I started shivering hard. Pulled out this Mylar blanket I'd had in my pack for years, wrapped it around my torso under the jacket, and felt warm again in about ten minutes. It was the only thing that kept me from a real bad situation. Anyone have a go-to piece of gear that's small but saved your bacon?

Worth its weight in gold" is spot on. I always thought those blankets were a gimmick until I had to use one after a bike crash in the cold. It stopped the shakes long enough for help to arrive. Changed my mind completely.
