The REI return desk lady who saved my tent with a rubber band
Last month I went in to return a tent pole that snapped on the second trip, totally my fault for forcing it into the sleeve wrong. The woman at the counter, Carol I think her name tag said, watched me fumble with the broken pieces and just asked if I had ten minutes. She walked me over to their repair bin, grabbed a ferrule splice and a small rubber band, and showed me how to sleeve the pole and tape it so the bend distributes evenly. I fixed it in the parking lot, used that tent again last weekend in 20 mph wind near the Snoqualmie river, and it held perfect. Has anyone else gotten a repair trick from a store employee that beat anything you found online?

Three separate REI employees have saved my gear with zip ties and duct tape. Carol sounds like a legend but honestly they might just be running a secret MacGyver training program back there.
