That $30 tarp saved my tent from a Colorado washout
Last July near Estes Park, a storm rolled in around 2 AM and my cheap tent started dripping right over my sleeping bag. I had bought a basic 10x12 blue tarp at a hardware store for $30 before the trip, mostly on a whim. I rigged it over the tent with some paracord I carry anyway, and it held up through the whole downpour. Same tarp has since worked as a ground sheet and a sun shade. Anyone else keep a plain tarp around for backup even when your tent claims it's waterproof?

Blue tarps are the real MVP of camping gear. That same $30 tarp has doubled as a rain fly, windbreak, and picnic blanket for years now. Waterproof tents are a lie, always bring the tarp.
