PSA: My $30 tarp failed in a storm at Lake George and I switched to a heavier one
I set up camp at Lake George last month with a cheap blue tarp over my tent, thinking it was good enough for a light rain. Around 2am the wind ripped two grommets right out and the tarp slapped me in the face while my sleeping bag soaked up water. I ended up in the car for the rest of the night with wet socks and a bad attitude. Next morning I drove to a hardware store and got a 10x12 heavy duty canvas tarp with reinforced corners. It weighs almost 5 pounds and cost me $65, but it held up fine in the next night's gusts. I was all about light and cheap gear but that night flipped me. Has anyone else gone back to heavy tarps after a bad blow?
