My uncle said to always pack a cheap tarp, and I finally get why

He told me this about five years ago when I was getting into car camping, and I thought it was just extra weight. Last weekend in the Oregon woods, a sudden storm turned my tent site into a mud pit. I had a basic blue tarp from a hardware store in my truck, maybe 8 bucks, and I threw it down under my tent. It kept everything dry and clean, and packing up was so much faster. Why don't more tent setup guides mention this simple step?

Five bucks for that tarp? Man, I paid almost twice that for mine and thought I got a deal. I can't believe your uncle was right about the cheap one working just as good. Now I'm wondering how many other things he told you that turned out to be genius hacks. Did he have any other simple tricks that seemed weird at first but saved your butt later on?

That's a solid tip for sure. A ground cloth is basic gear that gets ignored too often. It saves your tent floor and your sanity.

That blue tarp trick is a lifesaver. What other cheap gear tips did your uncle give you?
