My uncle said a cheap foam pad was fine for car camping, but my back disagreed

He told me to save my money and just use a basic roll from a big box store. I did that for two trips last fall, and woke up sore both times. Finally caved and bought a 3 inch thick self-inflating pad on sale for $80. The difference after a full night's sleep was huge, like sleeping on a real bed. Anyone have a good budget pick that splits the difference?
