My $40 'bear-proof' food container turned into a raccoon disco ball

I bought this hard plastic barrel thing before a trip to the Smokies last month, thinking it was a smart buy. The first night, a raccoon spent what felt like forever rolling it down a hill, making a crazy racket. It didn't get in, but the noise was unreal. I mean, it worked, but I got zero sleep listening to that thing clatter around the campsite. Has anyone found a quiet way to keep critters out that doesn't sound like a bowling alley at 2 AM?

Honestly that's just how those hard containers work. Tbh the noise is the whole point, it scares them off. You could try a soft bear bag hung way up in a tree, but that's a pain to do right. Ngl you might just have to get used to the racket or sleep with earplugs. It's better than waking up to a torn up campsite.

Yeah the noise is the whole point. I had a bear roll my can down a hill once, sounded like a bowling ball. It gave up after ten minutes of that. Earplugs are a must, the cheap foam ones work fine. You just have to remember it's a good sound, means the system is working.
