I keep seeing people hang their water filters wrong on the trail

I was out in the Sawtooths last week and watched three different groups set up their gravity filters with the clean bag higher than the dirty one. I mean, that totally blocks the flow because air gets stuck in the top. You have to keep the dirty bag at least a foot higher, so the air can rise into it instead of the filter. I fixed it for one guy and the water started running twice as fast. Has anyone else run into this, or found a better way to hang these things?

Jesus Christ, yeah I see this all the time. It's like people just don't think about how gravity actually works. So here's my question: did the guy you fixed it for even realize the bags were flipped? Because when I've tried to help people with this exact thing, half of them just stare at me like I'm speaking a different language. They hanged them that way for years thinking it was fine, and when you show them the obvious fix they get defensive. Like, do they actually care about getting clean water fast, or are they just going through the motions out there?

Yeah, saw a whole thread about it. Apparently it's a weird trick some airlines use.
