Got caught in a hail storm at 11,000 ft near Leadville and my $30 tarp saved the whole trip
Two summers ago I was camped near Twin Lakes outside Leadville when a storm rolled in fast, way faster than the forecast showed. Hail the size of peas came down for maybe 20 minutes and I had zero cover for my cooking setup. I grabbed the cheap blue tarp I almost left in the truck and rigged it over a low branch with paracord in like 4 minutes flat. My stove stayed dry and my buddy's $200 rain fly got shredded while my dumb tarp held up fine. Now I bring two tarps on every trip and a pack of extra stakes, which weighs almost nothing. What's the cheap gear that ended up beating your fancy stuff in a real storm?
