DAE try a $12 tarp instead of a footprint and end up liking it more?

Bought a cheap blue tarp at a hardware store in Flagstaff last month for a 3 night trip. My tent footprint costs $45 and weighs more. The tarp kept the bottom dry through a storm and packed down smaller. Only issue was the grommets, one bent on the second night. I'm not going back to the fancy footprint but I want to know if anyone else does this or if I just got lucky.
