A ranger in Shenandoah told me to ditch my tent footprint, and two soggy trips later I finally tried it
Back in May I was packing for a 3 day trip in Shenandoah and this older ranger at the backcountry desk said the footprint under my tent was doing nothing but trapping water. I argued with him for like 10 minutes because I paid $45 for that thing and every forum post says you need one. First trip out, my usual site got rained on hard and sure enough there was a puddle sitting right on top of the footprint under my floor. Second trip at a site near Big Meadows, same deal, water pooled between the footprint and the tent bottom. So I left it home on the third trip and my floor stayed dry both nights. Now I'm wondering if footprints only help on rocky ground and hurt you everywhere else. Anyone else tested this on purpose?
