Vent: Relying only on factory pieces prices out our customers
Many repairers insist on using only original factory pieces, but I disagree. Generic options often do the job just as well and cost much less. For example, I recently saved a classic rangefinder with a common spring, and it works fine. This strict rule makes simple fixes too costly for regular people. We risk turning away folks who love their old cameras. Let's be smart and use what gets the camera working again. It keeps repair alive and helps more people enjoy their gear.

Last Tuesday, I used a common hinge from a door handle to fix a Nikon F3 film door. It cost like two bucks and works perfect. From what I've seen, a lot of these old cameras share parts with everyday stuff. Sure, for some critical bits, you might want the real deal, but for springs and screws, why not save the cash. It keeps people in the hobby instead of pricing them out. My two cents, your mileage may vary.

Love how you MacGyvered that hinge onto a Nikon. Bet the camera purists are clutching their pearls. Two bucks beats fifty for a 'genuine' part any day.

It's just like fixing old cars, where generic hardware keeps classics on the road for cheap.
