That cheap heli-coil kit cost me a whole shutter assembly
Picked up a bargain heli-coil kit off eBay for $12 last month to fix some stripped threads on a Pentax Spotmatic. Worked fine for about two days, then the coil popped out and jammed the mirror mechanism. Spent three hours trying to extract it without scratching the mirror box, finally just gave up and swapped in a donor body. Has anyone else had bad luck with those cheap thread repair kits on old cameras?

Yeah, had the exact same thing happen on a Spotmatic. Never again.

The trick is to make sure the shutter speed dial clicks into place before you wind the film. I had a Spotmatic once that would fire but leave the mirror half-cocked if the dial wasn't fully set. @laurabennett might've had the same issue with the gears slipping if the advance lever wasn't pushed all the way through. A little grease on the friction points helps too, just don't hit the shutter blades.
