Serious question, is a full teardown really the only way to clean a sticky aperture ring?
Everyone on here told me to strip the whole lens down to fix a stiff aperture ring on an old Nikkor, but I tried something else first. I worked a tiny bit of naphtha into the ring gap with a toothpick, worked it back and forth about 50 times over an hour, and it freed right up with no teardown at all. I get why people go straight to the full strip, but on a lens worth maybe $80 I'd rather try the cheap fix first. What's your cutoff for when a full teardown is really worth it?
