PSA: I used to dunk whole focus rings in alcohol until a guy in Toledo showed me the cotton swab trick
Last week I had a sticky Helios 44-2 focus ring that felt like it was full of sand, so I soaked the whole thing in 91% isopropyl for 10 minutes and it washed all the old grease right out of the threads. A retired repair guy in Toledo watched me do it and said I was flushing the helicoid dry, then showed me how to roll a cotton swab with a drop of alcohol just around the rim so the grit comes out but the lube stays put. Has anyone else wrecked a lens this way, and what do you use to re-grease a helicoid after you flush it?
