My shop vac ate a shutter spring and I need a better plan
Last week I was cleaning out a Canon AE-1 that had a busted shutter and my shop vac sucked up the tiny spring right off the bench. I spent 45 minutes digging through the filter and never found it, so I had to order a whole new shutter assembly for $60. I usually work on a white towel to catch parts but got lazy and paid for it. Anybody have a trick for keeping small springs and screws from vanishing during disassembly?

Honestly, I felt that pain in my soul reading this. I've lost more tiny screws to carpet and shop vacs than I care to admit, and it always happens when I'm in a hurry. These days I use a magnetic parts tray for anything smaller than a dime, and I put the whole camera in a shallow cardboard box lid before I even start pulling things apart. It's a total game changer, but I still have a little dish magnet that sits on my bench for the real sneaky bits.
