I used to calibrate light meters by ear, and it went about as well as you'd think.

Trusted my sense of pitch to match exposure levels, but once set a pro camera for a night shoot in broad daylight. The client was not amused.

Eyes are the ones that get confused more often.

Yeah, the "ears confusing noon for midnight" thing reminds me of my buddy who tried to set audio levels by sight alone. He was so sure the waveform looked fine, but the whole interview sounded like it was recorded in a tin can.
