Am I the only one who almost lost a customer's Nikon over one tiny screw?
Last Tuesday I was working on a Nikon D750 at my bench in Rochester and dropped the shutter screw into the body cavity. I grabbed my magnet wand thinking it would be easy, but the screw was stuck under the mirror box and I had to pull the mount off to get it out. Took me 40 extra minutes but I got it back together and the shutter fires just fine. Anyone else have a go-to trick for fishing screws out of tight spots like that?
A buddy of mine dropped a spring from a Canon rebel into the body and spent two hours shaking it like a maraca before he gave up and pulled the mount too. His trick now is a shop vac with a piece of pantyhose rubber banded over the hose end, it sucks the screw right up without eating it. Another guy I know swears by a telescoping rod with a tiny magnet tip he files down to fit in gaps. Sometimes the screw is just wedged in a spot where no tool reaches, and taking it apart is faster than fighting it. Sucks about the extra 40 minutes but at least the shutter still fires.
