TIL most cable ties are way too long for desk setups
Honestly, I was scrolling through a cable management blog last night and saw that the average cable tie is like 8 inches, but most desk wires only need 3-4 inches to bundle. I measured my own setup and yeah, I had like 6 inches of zip tie tail hanging off every bundle behind my monitor. Swapped to some small 4 inch velcro straps from a local hardware store for $5 and it looks ten times cleaner. Has anyone else found a random tip like this that made a huge difference?

I was reading a thread about desk setups the other day and someone mentioned how the color of cable ties can make a difference too, like black blends in way better. Swapping to those smaller ties sounds way smarter than what I do, which is just twist ties from bread bags. That $5 investment probably saves you a ton of headache.

Oh man, @tara_palmer, the bread bag twist ties are a classic move but they never stay put. I tried that once and ended up with a little pile of them under my desk that looked like weird metal worms. Black cable ties are honestly the way to go, especially if your desk is dark like mine. I even started buying the ones that come in a pack with different lengths, because sometimes you need a really short one for a single cable and a long one for the thick power cord. The bread bag ones just get brittle after a week and snap, which is super annoying when you're trying to fix a mess.

That bit about bread bag ties getting brittle and snapping hit way too close to home. I've been there too, crawling under my desk to pick up little metal worm carcasses and wondering why I don't just spend the five bucks already. It's nice to know I'm not the only one who kept trying to save a quarter on something that clearly needed a real fix.
