Why does nobody talk about the old way to ground a drop?

For years I just used a ground block and a short wire to the nearest pipe, thinking it was fine. Then I got called back to a house in Springfield after a storm because their modem fried, and the homeowner showed me the burn mark on their baseboard. The ground wire had come loose and arced. Now I always use a proper grounding rod driven at least 8 feet, and I check the connection with a meter before I leave. How many of you still see the old pipe method being used?

That old pipe method fails more often in older homes with galvanized plumbing.

Galvanized pipes are the real issue, @xena_miller31.

Wait, @xena_miller31, it actually burned the baseboard?
