Carry a cheap toner in your tool bag, the kind with a speaker that beeps. That attic taught me to tone out every single line before you cut, even if you're sure which one is live. Saved me last month tracing a line some guy buried under blown-in insulation.

But what if you're in a huge hurry and just need to get the job done fast?

That toner trick is a total lifesaver. I keep a Klein Tools VDV500 in my truck for exactly that. Last week I had to find a single Cat5 in a bundle of like twenty, all the same color. Toned it out in under a minute instead of guessing and having to re-terminate. It's not just for avoiding live wires, it saves a ton of time on data lines too.
