Spent $150 on a fancy cable toner that barely worked in old houses
Bought one of those high end Fluke toners thinking it'd make my life easier on these old houses built in the 50s. Took me three hours to trace one line in a crawlspace because the signal kept bleeding into other wires. Ended up using a $35 chinese toner from amazon and it worked fine. Has anyone else had issues with expensive toners in older homes?

Three hours in a crawlspace with a Fluke? That's wild...

...and my back still remembers it three weeks later. It was a loose neutral on a 200amp panel, and of course the homeowner had stored about forty boxes of Christmas decorations right in front of it. Had to slide in sideways like a cat trying to avoid a bath. The Fluke was the only thing that kept me sane, because at least I knew the readings were right even if my knees were screaming. Crawlspaces are the great equalizer in this trade, no matter how much you charge upfront, the universe always collects its due in sore joints and spiderwebs in your hair.
