I used to laugh at the guys who carried a $150 Klein toner and probe set, but after tracing a buried line in a 1950s house last week, I'm a total convert.
What's one tool or method you were totally wrong about, and what specific job changed your mind?

Ever tried a laser level for tile?

Grant's point about the bounce is real, but a laser level is still the best tool for tile. The trick is to put a piece of painter's tape where the laser hits the shiny surface. The dot shows up clear on the matte tape. Without that, you're just guessing if your lines are straight, and tile doesn't forgive many mistakes. It turns a tricky job into something you can actually manage.

Just watch out for the laser bouncing off shiny tile.
