Chose the fish tape over the glow rods at my first apartment job in Tacoma, still thinking about it
Back when I started doing installs in Tacoma around 2011, my lead handed me a fish tape and a set of glow rods and told me to pick one for a tricky interior wall run, and I grabbed the tape because it felt like the "real pro" tool. That choice cost me about 40 minutes of fighting a stubborn bend in a wall full of old insulation, while my lead did the same run next door with rods in maybe 8 minutes flat. Anyone else here still reach for the old standby out of habit even after something newer proves faster?
Remember thinking the tape was the only way to do it right? Yeah that was me too. I did new builds for a couple years and the old guys all swore by tape, so I just copied them without asking why. Then one day I watched a guy pull a run through a wall packed with spray foam using rods in like five minutes, and I felt like an idiot for all the hours I'd wasted. The tape still has its place in conduit or long straight pulls, but for anything with bends or insulation it's just pain. Kinda funny how "real pro" tools are sometimes just the old ones nobody bothered to replace.
