My dad's old shoebox of ties taught me a better way to corral cords
About two years ago my dad passed and we were cleaning out his closet. He had this shoebox full of maybe 40 old neckties from the 70s and 80s, all rolled up tight and standing on end like little soldiers. I asked my mom why he did that and she said he learned it in the Navy, rolling them keeps the creases out and they don't tangle. Last month I was staring at the rat's nest behind my TV stand, like 6 power bricks and 12 cables just melted together, and it hit me. I started rolling each cable into a tight circle and standing them upright in a plastic bin, same idea as the ties. Now I can grab the exact cable I need without pulling out three others, and the bin fits right next to the surge protector. Has anyone else tried the old-people storage method for their wires, or am I the only one whose grandpa's habits finally made sense?

Picked up a similar trick from my old man, but with his fishing lures instead of ties. He kept all his crankbaits in these little plastic tackle boxes, each one in its own slot so the hooks don't snag. I did the same thing with my USB cables and charging cords, using a cheap divided organizer from the hardware store. Each cord gets its own loop, zip-tied once, and I just drop it in its spot. Takes a second to put away, but I haven't had to untangle anything in months. The key is actually putting them back after you use them, which is the hard part.
