I used to just stuff all my cables in a drawer and call it good, but after my 4th USB cable died from getting kinked I finally bought those velcro cable ties from Home Depot last month and now I actually label them with masking tape.

Back in the 90s I just had like 2 wires for my CRT monitor and a phone line, but now I've got 16 cables behind my desk and if I don't wrangle them they turn into a rat's nest that shorts out my surge protector - anyone else find old shoelaces work better than those expensive cable sleeves?

That's exactly the problem with how people treat their setups these days. Everyone avoids the small stuff until it turns into a disaster. I see it all the time with friends and neighbors. They'll run cables everywhere, let dust pile up, ignore the warning signs. Then boom, something shorts out or catches fire and they act surprised. It's part of this bigger mindset where people think "it'll be fine" until it's not. A few zip ties and twenty minutes of work could've saved all that hassle and risk. People just don't want to invest the little bit of effort upfront.
