Bought a 6 dollar pack of velcro ties, and my desk setup somehow got worse
So last weekend I finally got fed up with the mess behind my TV and grabbed one of those cheap velcro tie rolls from the hardware store down the street. I figured I'd just bundle everything into nice neat groups, zip, done. Yeah, no. What actually happened is I tied the HDMI and the power cord for my soundbar together, and now there's this low hum that wasn't there before. I sat there for like 40 minutes wiggling cables like an idiot before it clicked. I ended up moving them apart and the hum went away, but now I've got this weird kink in one of the ties that won't lay flat. My takeaway is that bundling power and signal cables right next to each other is a bad call, which I guess is obvious to people who know stuff. Has anybody found a cheap tie that doesn't leave a weird crease in the cord after a few months?
Velcro ties are fine, the hum is a separate thing and you already figured it out. Power next to signal can cause noise, sure, but the tie itself didn't do that, the placement did. I've used cheap velcro for years on everything and the cords come out fine once you pull them off slow instead of yanking. The crease you're seeing is usually just the cord sitting tight for a long time, and it goes back to normal if you leave it loose for a day or two. The real fix here is running the power cable down one side and the signal cables down the other, then you can bundle each group however you want.
