The finish guy at my shop in Toledo said sanding past 220 is a waste on oak, now I can't stop thinking about it
He watched me go to 320 on a red oak face frame and just shook his head. Said the grain pops the same at 220 once stain hits it and I'm burning hours for nothing. I tested it on a scrap panel and honestly he might be right, but every cabinetmaker I learned from drilled 320 into my head. We do about 15 kitchens a year and if I cut that step I get maybe a day back per job. Not sure I trust it yet. Anybody here actually finish oak at 220 and get away with it?
Feels like every old timer has a different rule and they all say it with the same look. That 320 step is muscle memory at this point, so dropping it is gonna feel wrong for a while even if the scrap panel backs him up. Trust your test cuts and see how the first couple kitchens look before you make it a habit.
