Old timer's two cents on soft-close hinges got me thinking

Met a retired cabinetmaker at a jobsite in Portland last Tuesday, been doing this since 1978. He watched me install a full set of Blum soft-close hinges and said, "You kids fix problems nobody had." At first I wrote it off, but he showed me how a simple friction hinge lasts 40 years with zero parts to fail. Hit me different because he pointed at my service van and figured half my callbacks are hinge adjustments, not real wear. Anyone else ever had an older guy trash a modern upgrade and make you second guess it?
