I had to choose between a full dado or pocket screws for a built-in bookcase

Went with dados for the main shelves and it was rock solid, but it added about 4 hours to the build time. Anyone have a go-to method for quick but sturdy shelf joints on big pieces?

For a big bookcase last year, pocket screws with glue did the trick. It was way faster than dados and still feels really solid after a year. Sometimes the simpler method is plenty strong for the job.

Dados are worth the extra time for that solid feel.

Totally get that. It's like choosing a real book over an e-reader, just feels more right in your hands. Some things are worth the extra effort.
