Rant: my old boss told me to stop tracking returns by hand, and it fixed our Tuesday chaos
I grabbed coffee last Thursday with a guy I used to work with at a small parts company in Reno, and he asked how our back room was running. I told him it was fine, and he just laughed and said "you're still logging returns in that spiral notebook, aren't you?" He was right, and it stung. I switched our team over to a shared sheet that same week with one column for date and one for why the item came back, and within a month our Tuesday restock mess dropped from about 3 hours to 45 minutes because we finally knew what was coming. What is the one paper process you're still holding onto because it's always been done that way?
My dad ran a hardware store for 20 years and kept his whole inventory on index cards in a shoebox. When he finally got a computer he still wrote everything on the cards first and then typed it in "just to be safe." Took him two years to stop doing that. Old habits die hard when you've been burned before by some new system that everyone swore would work. The notebook thing sounds dumb until you realize it probably saved your butt a few times when the computer was down or somebody forgot to charge it. Glad the shared sheet worked out though, 3 hours down to 45 minutes is no joke on a Tuesday.
