Paper invoice trail at a local auto shop turned into a wild goose chase
I stopped by Jerry's Garage in Portland last Thursday to grab a copy of my service receipt for a warranty claim. The office had stacks of carbon copies everywhere, one of those old school pegboards, and a filing cabinet that looked older than me. Turns out their system for matching invoice numbers to work orders was literally a shoebox of index cards sorted by customer first name. My car came in under my wife's name because she dropped it off, so we spent 20 minutes digging through the J pile. When we finally found the card, the numbers didn't match the actual physical copy they gave me at pickup. Jerry shrugged and said the card system is what keeps him honest, but I had to drive back twice to get the right paperwork. Has anyone else run into a business still running on paper that refuses to switch to even a basic spreadsheet?
