Debate: in-house team vs outsourcing - which actually saves more?

I run a small ecommerce biz in Austin and hit a wall last year where I had to pick between hiring a full-time ops person or paying a 3PL to handle fulfillment. Went with the 3PL for 6 months, cost me about $4,500 a month, and it was a mess - wrong boxes, late shipments. Fired them and now I've got a part-timer I pay $18 an hour doing it. Anyone else wrestle with this choice and regret one side?

Four thousand a month sounds steep just for mistakes.

Would you pay someone four grand a month to catch your slipups before they cost you a client or a legal headache? For some businesses, that's a small price compared to the damage one big mistake can cause.
