My uncle said don't put my LLC in my own name, and 2 years later a client tried to sue me personally
When I started my landscaping LLC in Boise back in 2022, my uncle (who ran a hardware store for 30 years) told me to keep my personal name off everything and never sign contracts as myself. I thought he was being paranoid, so I signed a $11,000 patio job as 'owner' without writing LLC after my name. The client's patio cracked that winter and their lawyer came after me personally, not the company, because of how I signed. We settled for $4,500 out of my own bank account. Now I'm wondering, is this a real rule everyone follows or did my uncle just get lucky avoiding it for 30 years?
